Although four out of ten households in the district are already supplied with fast internet, the plans for expansion are made more difficult. For the current year, a further 20,000 fiber optic connections are planned to extend the supply by the end of 2025 to half of the households. The Rems-Murr district even has the potential to take a top position in the nationwide comparison by the end of 2024. But the current economic situation is considering the expansion.

The good news: Digitization Minister Thomas Strobl recently provided 26 million euros for the Esslingen, Ludwigsburg, Stuttgart and Rems-Murr counties. Around 22 percent of these funds, i.e. more than 5.7 million euros, flow directly to 13 cities and municipalities within the Rems-Murr district, such as the Website of the Rems-Murr-Kreis reported.

The funding is specially intended for connecting schools, a clinic and under -sector individual buildings. District Administrator Dr. Richard Sigel emphasizes the progress in broadband expansion and indicates that the number of fiber optic connections in the region has risen from less than 2,000 to around 23,000.

12 schools in central cities and municipalities benefit from 80,000 euros each, which provides a total of 1.5 million euros. The Median Hint in Oppenweiler also receives a grant. The remaining amount of 4.1 million euros goes to Alfdorf, Kirchberg an der Murr, Korb, Leutenbach and Rudersberg to improve internet care.

Despite the positive progress, the expansion also faces major challenges. The Zweckverband Broadband Expansion Rems-Murr, which has been active since 2019, has already awarded tenders for the connection of schools and the care of sub-supplied areas. The feedback will be evaluated at the beginning of October, whereby a market exploration is carried out to finally check the current internet supply.

The goal of the Federal Government is to reach a nationwide supply of fiber optic connections to the house and the latest mobile phone standard by 2030. It is becoming increasingly clear that a powerful digital infrastructure is crucial for the digitization of rural municipalities.
