Free WiFi in Fellbach: speed and reception in the test!
in Fellbach, a city in the Rems-Murr district, the citizens can look forward to free WiFi at 12 locations at 12 locations, which is offered under the brand name "Free Key". As the Stuttgarter Nachrichten report, the project was launched in April 2017, with a budget of 43,000 euros being provided for the expansion. Annual operating costs of around 5,000 to 6,000 euros for internet connections, electricity and maintenance are also incurred. But how does the free WiFi cut off in terms of speed?
The test results show that the connection speeds vary greatly. The download speed between the Rathaus-Carrée and the Lutherkirche was a disappointing 0.63 Mbps, while on the "WiFi zone" around the Lutherkirche, better 3.6 Mbps were reached. Even at the station forecourt, you could still surf with 3.9 Mbps (Telekom) and 4.22 Mbps (Vodafone). On the other hand, rather slow values of 0.15 Mbps download were measured at some locations and just 1.18 Mbps upload. Mein Stuttgart supplements that this may be sufficient for simple internet searches, however, more complex requirements require mobile data.
WiFi compared to other cities
Compared to Waiblingen, which houses 16 access points, the WLAN coverage in Fellbach is less comprehensive. There, the best value in WLAN could be measured with 16.1 Mbps, while Deutsche Bahn even offers impressive 85 Mbps on the S 2 route, which is over 20 times faster than the best values in Fellbach. These differences raise questions about whether the free WiFi in Fellbach is really the needs of the users: in the inside.
Internet supply in Fellbach is solid overall. According to Mein Stuttgart, 93% of households have access to DSL speeds of up to 50 Mbit/s, and fiber optic availability should be expanded on 90% of households by 2030. Providers such as Telekom, Vodafone and O2 cover the region with LTE and 5G; Vodafone even offers a 100%LTE coverage.
future prospects and conclusions
Fellbach is thus a place with a robust internet infrastructure, despite the defects in public WLAN. There are a total of 36 public hotspots in the city, companies from various providers. The WLAN of Deutsche Telekom, Freifunk and even Rewe contributes to the comprehensive coverage. Nevertheless, the question remains how the city can further improve the free WiFi in order to meet the growing demands of users: to meet inside.
In the future, it will also be exciting to observe how other cities deal with their WLAN projects. According to Statista, the average internet speed is often far above the values that can be reached in Fellbach in many countries worldwide. The challenges that Fellbach has towards his neighbors are obvious - it is time to improve here and adapt to modern needs.
