Esslingen becomes hydrogen region: Future mobility in focus!

At the Esslingen University of Applied Sciences, there is a lot going on around the topic of hydrogen! On June 25, 2025, the event "University of Esslingen: Competence Center for a Hydrogen Region" takes place there, which is aimed at all interested parties in the areas of research, teaching and projects in the hydrogen sector. The university offers an exciting program that begins with a tour of the fuel cell laboratory from 3:00 p.m.

dr. Oliver Ehret, head of the energy technology and sector coupling cluster, is available as a scientific contact. Interested parties can contact him at oliver.ehret@hs-esslingen.de . The event not only offers extensive insights into current research projects, but also the opportunity to exchange ideas in a panel discussion about the future of a hydrogen region of Esslingen. The networking afterwards offers the ideal opportunity to make contacts and exchange ideas.

hydrogen as the key to the energy transition

The importance of hydrogen is also strongly emphasized in the Esslingen district. As part of change towards a more sustainable economy and society that leads to the end of combustion engines by 2035, the district sees hydrogen technology as a central component. This technology is not only crucial for the decarbonization of economy and mobility, but also enables intelligent networking between different sectors, such as electricity, heat and transport systems.

By using green hydrogen in industry and as a fuel for power plants, effective storage and use of regenerative electricity is promoted. The commitment of the Esslingen district can be seen, among other things, in the lighthouse project "Emission-Free Street Master (LKES²)", which is intended to activate the market for fuel cell drives for commercial vehicles. This promotes regional added value - an important step in the right direction!

on the way to a circular economy

and hydrogen is not only important for the energy transition, but also fits the idea of the circular economy. This pursues the goal of minimizing resource consumption and waste production. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is actively involved in the transition from linear to circular economic systems. This not only promotes hydrogen as a sustainable energy solution, but also the protection of our valuable resources and the minimization of emissions are in focus.

In summary, it can be said: The Esslingen University of Applied Sciences and the Esslingen district are on a promising path to create a hydrogen ecosystem that not only strengthens the region, but can also make a significant contribution to the energy transition. So the coming months promise exciting developments - there is something!
