The emergency services were alerted at around 12:45 p.m. while they were simultaneously working on a traffic accident on the L605. The fire brigade was called to Ettlingen-Spessart to a fire in the contents of a garbage truck. Only a short time later, at 12:47 p.m., 15 firefighters, mainly from the Ettlingen-Stadt department, were on the scene at “Im Kohlmichel” street.
Fortunately, the garbage collection employees reacted immediately and dumped the burning load onto the street. This allowed the fire department to intervene quickly and extinguish the fire using breathing apparatus. The road had to be temporarily closed during the extinguishing work and the subsequent cleaning operations, which certainly caused some diversions. However, the cause of the fire is still unclear - there is speculation about possible causes such as a burning cigarette or exposure to heat.
Fire department in constant operation
This operation is one of a number of operations that the Ettlingen fire department has had to process in the past few days. On June 11th, the fire department had to respond to a fire in a traffic accident without anyone being trapped. On June 8th, a fire was also reported at the city train station, where a fire alarm system (BMA) was triggered. Even though the fire brigade was called upon several times within a week, the operational reports show that the comrades always have a good hand in using their resources.
The question remains whether the police will investigate this case to find out more about the background to the fire in the garbage truck. However, the incident is certainly a topic of conversation in the city and raises awareness of how important and dangerous such fires can be - even in everyday life.
