What is the volunteer card?
The volunteer card is introduced in Baden-Württemberg as an appreciation for volunteering and offers various advantages for owners. The introduction is initially carried out in model locations such as Freiburg, Ulm, Calw and in the Ostalb district, where the card has been tested since August 1, 2023. The aim of the state government is the nationwide introduction by 2025. The card is granted people with high civic engagement, and the criteria for the acquisition were developed together with local state associations and municipalities.
owners of the volunteer card awaits a colorful range of benefits such as reduced admissions in cultural, educational and leisure facilities. In Freiburg there are even special “extras for volunteering”, including special events and guided tours. The prerequisites for receiving the card are clearly defined: at least one year of voluntary commitment and the performance of at least 200 hours of voluntary work in the past twelve months or 100 hours in a common good. There are exceptions for beneficiaries who cannot meet the hours of the hour, for example for Juleica owners or members of the volunteer fire brigade.
The next steps
The list of participating institutions is continuously supplemented and can be viewed on the website of the respective municipalities. From April 1, 2025, new registrations via associations and institutions must be carried out as a collective request.
