Sports medicine in focus: Young talent symposium in Freiburg inspires!

What’s next for sports medicine doctors? A big event is just around the corner: the 4th Young Talent Symposium of the German Society for Sports Medicine and Prevention (DGSP) will take place in Freiburg im Breisgau from September 19th to 21st, 2024. The renowned experts show that sports medicine is a field full of career opportunities and exciting developments. Similar symposiums in Potsdam, Saarbrücken and Tübingen had already been very well received in previous years. Freiburg University Hospital reports that the event serves to exchange knowledge and experiences in the field of sports medicine.

A highlight of the program is the multidisciplinary career opportunities that participants are introduced to. Not only are keynotes on career paths in sports medicine and evidence-based medicine offered, but also application-oriented method workshops that are intended to help tomorrow's practitioners directly into their everyday working lives. In collaboration with the Institute for Evidence in Medicine at the University of Freiburg, the exchange on scientific evidence criteria in sports medicine will also play a central role.

Program and organization

The scientific management team - consisting of Peter Deibert, Anja Hirschmüller, Johanna Kubosch and Kai Röcker - has created an exciting program that is primarily aimed at students and young workers. In addition to interesting lectures, there will also be opportunities for exchange through free submission of posters and short lectures. Students and experts can present and discuss their research results here. DGSP highlights that abstract submissions will be possible from May 6th to June 30th, 2024.

In order to promote networking, supporting events are also planned where participants can get to know each other better over a relaxed get-together. The event secretary is Dr. Oliver Morath, who is available to answer any questions about the symposium.

A look into the future

There is also further interest in such events in the field of occupational medicine. The follow-up symposium will take place on March 19, 2026 in Munich, which proves that the commitment to promoting young talent in the health professions remains unbroken. Occupational Medicine Action Alliance recently reported on the young talent symposium that took place at the University of Wuppertal in April 2025 and motivated many students to expand their career horizons.

Job speed dating helped the students to come into direct contact with experienced specialists, while company tours, for example in the Wuppertal suspension railway workshop, provided a practical insight into the world of work. Such formats are worth their weight in gold and encourage you to explore the different paths to a passion for occupational medicine.

From all this information it is clear that both sports medicine and occupational medicine continue to be very popular and offer a variety of opportunities for young talent. So if you want to take a look into the future of medicine, Freiburg is the right place for you in September!
