Schwäbisch Gmünd, Deutschland - In Schwäbisch Gmünd there are exciting news for car fans: Prof. Dr. Aleksandar Bjelic plans to return the legendary car brand Yugo. The professor has secured the trademark rights and wants to present a new model that ties in with the success story of the once popular vehicle. From 1981 to 2008 the Yugo in Yugoslavia was produced by the manufacturer Zastava and was also very popular in the USA, where it was sold for just $ 3,990. Gmünder daily mail reports that Bjelic, owner of Globo Car Care, on one Complete model series works that should not only include a classic three-door, but also five-door, four-seat convertibles and a roadster.

But that's not all. An SUV model and a small delivery car, similar to the VW Caddy, are also on the list of innovations. The first presentations of the new models are already planned: the roadster will be presented in September, while the SUV is to be presented in New York in November. A driving prototype is to be presented in Belgrade at Expo 2027. It is particularly gratifying that Bjelic is already thinking of a fully electric version after a variant with a 1.4-liter gas engine is planned with about 135 hp.

The future of Yugo

Bjelic sees his project as an opportunity to act in a market that is increasingly left by manufacturers. The focus is on affordable small cars, with an entry -level price of less than 15,000 euros and other variants that should cost less than 20,000 euros. The new edition of the Yugo is positioned as cheap and practical to address a wider target group. The Serbian designer Darko Marčeta, which is responsible for a retro-futuristic design, is also responsible for this new concept, which is intended to preserve the charm of the original the autopian.

The first sketches of the new Yugo have already been published, and interested parties can look forward to a design model that is to be presented this year.
