Biberach starts offensive against child poverty: a network for opportunities!

On May 22, 2025, the opening of the prevention network against child poverty took place in the Gaisental district house in the Biberach district. At this significant event, which was opened by the Social Affairs Director Petra Alger, Mr. Weiß from the State Statistical Office of Baden-Württemberg presented the structure and core elements of the project. The participants received exciting insights into the first results of a needs analysis presented by project coordinator Elisabeth Ott. Since the initiation of first prevention networks in the districts of singing and Tübingen in 2010, 26 out of 44 counties in Baden-Württemberg have been active in this important project. The district of Biberach took part in September 2022 and is supported by the "BC - Together for a better future" foundation from the Kreissparkasse Biberach. Despite the initial skepticism of the CDU and FWV district parliamentary groups, which rejected the new jobs, the project can be operated without their own funds through state funding and the foundation.

In Biberach, project coordinator Elisabeth Ott has already started work. A steering group with representatives of the district office and free providers was founded to lead the network. Two to three meetings are planned per year, of which two sessions have already been successfully carried out.

The greatest challenge is to use existing structures and develop operational measures. "Help from a single source" should be available for those affected to save them repetitive stories of their personal stories. To do this, Elisabeth Ott visits various working groups and bodies to spread the content of the project. Particular attention is also paid to the collection of information, since many offers are either not known or are not low -threshold enough.

The desired progress is documented over the first two years of the funding module. At the end of this phase, the lack of structures in the fight against child poverty are to be created and gaps in the prevention chain are to be determined. If the district council agrees, further building blocks will follow for further development and streaking by 2029.

The prevention network not only has the task of identifying people with poverty at an early stage, but also better to coordinate help offers. The aim is to improve the life situation of children in poverty and to give them better opportunities regardless of their social background. A similar project in Göppingen, which operates under the motto "Bridges for a chanceful life", pursues similar goals to better support and network families that are affected by poverty.

This comprehensive approach to combat child poverty shows that in Biberach and other counties there is a real awareness of the importance of early help and structures. The participation opportunities must be actively improved so that the youngest in our society get the opportunities they earn.
