Big step for Laupheim's nature: South Sea becomes a nature reserve!
Laupheim, Deutschland - In the Laupheim town council, the nature reserve "South Sea-Kingenbühl" took a significant step towards its expulsion. With a large majority, the municipal council approved the introduction of the expulsion procedure by the Tübingen regional council (RP). This was announced on July 19, 2025 and represents an important stage for nature conservation in the region. The planned area includes the South Pacific, bank areas and adjacent forest areas and extends over a total of 50.2 hectares.
There were concerns in advance. Critics accused the RP Tübingen without acting the integration of important actors such as the local council of Obersulmetingen as well as farmers, fishermen and hunters. These allegations led to emotional discussions, both in the municipal council and in Obersulmetingen, which took place in October 2024. But the RP Tübingen calmed down the minds by explaining that the procedure was still in its infancy and that all public issues are included in the process.
integration of the citizens
In order to address the concerns and concerns of the population, an information event by the regional council took place on January 21, 2025 in the Laupheim town hall. The aim of this event was to clarify the citizens about the importance and benefits of the nature reserve, to explain the procedure and to offer space for suggestions and concerns. "South Sea Kingenbühl", former quarry lake and about two kilometers southwest of Laupheim, plays an important role as a habitat for numerous plant and animal species, especially for resting migratory birds and very threatened types of pioneer. Participation in the event is free of charge and all citizens are welcome.
In the current procedure, some adjustments have already been decided. So hunting from the boat and from the sandbar towards water is prohibited in the future, and fishing is no longer permitted between 1 a.m. and sunrise. The mayor of Obersulmetingen confirmed that the concerns of those affected were taken seriously. Overall, farmers expressed themselves positively and did not report any significant restrictions on agriculture.
costs and care
At the meeting in the municipal council, possible costs for the city were also discussed, which could be associated with the designation of the nature reserve. The first mayor made it clear that the designation does not result in any additional costs, but maintenance measures will be necessary. An application for funding is submitted through the municipality to support the necessary measures financially.
Overall, the decision of the local council is considered a big step for nature conservation in Laupheim. The mayor praised the exchange between those involved and the consideration of the concerns of all groups involved in the process. The designation of the nature reserve "Südsee-Kingenbühl" could not only promote biodiversity in the region, but also strengthen the sense of community.
