Hockenheim competes in the city cycling: every kilometer counts for the climate!

Hockenheim, Deutschland - Hockenheim is ready for an exciting time on two wheels! The city takes part in the international campaign in order not only to promote the fun of cycling, but also to support the switch to the bike in everyday life and thus make a contribution to climate protection. The campaign period extends from June 29 to July 20, 2025, and the anticipation for the upcoming events is already noticeable. Maximilian Burkhart from the Department of Building and Living emphasizes the health benefits of cycling that not only improve the environment, but also our personal well -being.

Last year, 408 Hockenheimers have already participated and cycled astonishing 73,463 kilometers, which resulted in CO2 savings of 12,000 kilograms. This remarkable performance shows how much each individual kilometer counts and will continue in the upcoming competition with the support of the State Initiative Radkultur.

participation and competitions

All Hockenheim citizens, students of Hockenheim schools, employees of local companies and members of Hockenheim clubs are entitled to participate. A special highlight is school cycling, which is carried out as a special competition as part of the state program "Movers - Aktiv to School". The most wheel -active schools are even awarded nationwide. Registrations for school cycling are possible at Schulradeln-bw.de

The km that are covered during the campaign can be entered on the platform www.stadtradeln.de/rhein-neckar-kreis or conveniently tracked with the city bike app via GPS. This app also enables the participants to meet in a team chat to start touring together. For all participants without a smartphone, the town hall in Hockenheim offers the opportunity to submit a kilometer list by July 21, 2025.

health and environmentally friendly advantages of cycling

The positive effects of cycling are diverse and could be proven by experts and studies. Cycling is not just an environmentally friendly means of transportation; It also saves money and space in our cities. Every kilometer that we cover on the bike reduces CO2 emissions by significant 166 grams compared to the car. In addition, up to 30 % of car journeys in urban areas could be replaced by bicycle traffic, which would bring massive relief for the environment and people. In many cities, such as Amsterdam, bicycle traffic is already a permanently established element of urban life.

Health studies show that daily moderate movement can significantly reduce the risk of civilization diseases. Cycling can increase life expectancy and could help workers have fewer absent days. Especially on short distances that are less than five kilometers, the bicycle can represent the fastest and most effective means of transport. In addition, cycling is inexpensive, while using a car in most cases is more expensive and more environmentally harmful.

The Hockenheimers have the opportunity to not only promote their health through their participation and common use in city cycles, but also to actively contribute to improving air quality and reducing traffic noise in their city. With a little commitment and fun of cycling, you can make your part to environmental relief, and inspire your neighbors to tour together. Now it says: on the bikes, ready, go!
