Mannheim: New petrol station brings environmentally friendly Super E20!
Mannheim, Deutschland - You may hardly think it is possible, but the first petrol station in Germany that offers Super E20 has been in Mannheim since October 2023. Although this innovation is still in the closed fleet test, it could be pioneering of a more environmentally friendly fuel. The ADAC emphasizes that Super E20 should significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions with up to 20 percent bioethanol bime mixture. The ADAC technology president Karsten Schulze notes that a higher admixture rate could further increase the savings potential.
Compared to conventional petrol, such as the Super E5, and also the already introduced Super E10, Super E20 promises to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions. According to the ADAC, the use of E10 already saves up to three million tons of CO₂ annually, while E20 even promises additional 15 percent savings compared to fossil gasoline. The provider Cropenergies, a pioneer in sustainable ethanol production, supplies the first gas station with its product, which is also known as "Super Eco 20".
What's behind Super E20?
Super E20 is expected with a lot of tension, but the use is currently only approved for selected vehicles. The freshling on the fuel market is not yet standardized or officially approved for series vehicles. Südzucker AG is currently testing the fuel with around 85 vehicles to ensure that it can be used easily in everyday life. Interestingly, Cropenergies has already received a VW harmfulness certificate, which confirms the use of E20 in some test vehicles.
The discussion about Super E20 is not new; The ADAC has been committed to introducing this green fuel since 2020. It is hardly surprising that the car manufacturers are required to release their vehicle fleets for E20 use. It is currently estimated that up to 50 percent of the Ottomotors E20 operating in Germany could tolerate, which increases the potential for a broad introduction enormously.
How green is E20 really?
A look into the world of bioethanol shows some exciting aspects. Ethanol, often obtained from renewable raw materials such as sugar beet or grain, can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The integration of bioethanol in petrol led to a saving of around 56.5 million tons of CO₂ equivalents in 2023-this corresponds to the annual emission of over 12 million cars!
The advantages can be recognized both environmentally political and economically. Ethanol is not only non -toxic and biodegradable, but also has a positive effect on the rural economy. Ethanol production offers farmers a reliable source of income. Nevertheless, there are also challenges: the cultivation of plants for bioethanol has its dark sides, such as the potential negative environmental impacts and the competition between food and fuel production, which can increase food prices.
The ADAC and many supporters hope that a new, environmentally friendly way will be taken with Super E20. If the price is in the area of Super E10 and the E20 continues without CO₂ prices, the new fuel could become an attractive alternative for drivers.
It remains exciting to see whether Super E20 can prevail and what further steps in the fight against climate change are necessary. A good hand when driving and refueling will surely be more important in the future than ever!
