Young tiger Tujuh and Marwar leave the Heidelberg Zoo!

The suspension railway from Heidelberg has caused excitement in the past few days - not only through the picturesque view of the city, but above all through the excursions of the little tigers. The Heidelberg Zoo has another important step as part of the European Conservation Breeding Program (EEP) for the Sumatra tiger. Tigerkater Tujuh and Tigerin Marwar leave her birth group and are looking for a new home.

Shortly after her second birthday, Tujuh started his trip to the zoo of an English colleague, while his sister Marwar, who moved to a zoo in Denmark in early June, can still enjoy the last few days in the zoo at home. These decisions about the new locations make the zool lines in close coordination - in the case of these two tigers, this was done about a year ago. Weik Medien reports that such removals are part of a larger species protection program that should ensure the continued existence of these majestic animals.

But not only the two outliers ensure joy in the zoo. On August 10, 2023, Tiger Karis gave birth to three young animals in the Heidelberg Zoo - an event that makes the hearts of all animal lovers beat faster. Unfortunately, one of the little tiger babies had to make their lives, but the other two are constantly clean and are intensively looked after by their mother. In the first few weeks, Karis took care of her little ones, who are still blind and strongly dependent on the proximity of her mother. The Zoo Heidelberg keeps an insight into the action through cameras so as not to disturb the family.

The entire team has a lot of trouble with Karis and their young to ensure that everyone is growing up healthy. While the living young animals still have to stay in the litter box, the father Tebo, who is separated from the rest of the family, is in contact with his partner and the little ones. Incidentally, the breeding couple was selected as a genetically ideal duo in order to contribute to the preservation of the species.

The protection of the Sumatra tiger

These efforts are all the more important than the Sumatra tiger are very threatened with extinction. On the Indonesian island of Sumatra, only a few hundred animals can be found in the wild, thanks to wild practices and the loss of habitats due to economic growth and nature destruction. Friends Hauptstadtzoos has shown that the illegal tiger hunt is still a lucrative business with an annual turnover of over 25 million US dollars. The demand for parts of asian medicine remains at a rarer level, but the causes of the threats to the tiger population are still alarming: forest possessions for palm oil plantations are a serious danger to the habitat of these majestic animals.

The fate of the Sumatra tiger is also a wake-up call for nature conservation. With every move and every rescued animal, the zoos set a statement that you have to take care of the endangered species - locally and globally. Tigerkater Tujuh and Tigerin Marwar are now helping to ensure the survival of their kind in other regions, and they remain alive in memory of the visitors to the Heidelberg Zoo.
