Baden-Württemberg in bicycle rank: Rutesheim beams at the top!

Eislingen/Fils, Deutschland - In Baden-Württemberg, cycling is becoming increasingly popular-this is clearly shown in the ADFC bicycle climate test 2024. The survey, which was carried out by the ADFC , highlights the satisfaction of the bike driving of their cities. Around 213,000 cyclists: Between September 1 and November 30, 2024, their feedback gave their feedback and thus provided important impulses for the municipalities.

Particularly gratifying: Rutesheim leads the ranking of the Baden-Württemberg cities with a grade of 2.4. The city is followed by Ettlingen (2.76) and Tübingen (2.77). The other top positions occupy Eislingen/Fils (2.92) as well as Freiburg im Breisgau (3.03) and Constance (3.04) - all cities that are characterized by their commitment to cyclists: inside. Karlsruhe, Walldorf and some major cities can also be found in the list. In order not only to look at the best places, it should be mentioned that the average grade of all 26 cities surveyed in Baden-Württemberg is 3.8, which is an improvement by 0.1 points compared to 2022.

cycling in everyday life - where is bw?

The progress in Baden-Württemberg cannot be overlooked if you consider that the region, together with Hesse and Lower Saxony, is one of the pioneers of bicycle friendliness in Germany. Cyclingists are particularly optimistic about the availability of rental bikes (grade 3.2) and in the investment in the cycling infrastructure (grade 2.9), which were better than 2022 by 0.4 points. Freiburg stands out here and even received a grade of 1.8 for the range of public bicycles.

But there are also dark sides. According to the survey, only 35 to 90 percent of cyclists feel safe in many cities. Especially in Stuttgart and Pforzheim, 86% and 90% rate their security as low. In contrast, Tübingen shows significantly better values with 28% and Freiburg with 35%. These differences make it clear that there is still a lot to do in terms of security.

The challenges for cyclists: inside

The weaknesses in the use of bicycles in Baden-Württemberg are also

highlight. According to the users, the acceptance of cyclists, the feeling of security and conflicts between bicycle and car traffic still have improvement potential. In addition, the problem of bicycle thefts is pointed out; Tübingen takes an innovative step here with lockable wheel stations for 1,100 bicycles.

The ADFC survey not only serves to evaluate, but also as an impetus for targeted improvements in the infrastructure. Support comes from the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport that the study has financed. This is carried out every two years and thus regularly gives cities the opportunity to evaluate their bike friendliness and act accordingly.

The results of the test are not only important for cyclists: but also for municipalities and political decision -makers who receive valuable indications of improving the conditions through the feedback. After all, a good knack for the design of bike paths could not only increase the safety of cyclists, but also further increase the popularity of cycling - and that would be a profit for all road users.
